Saint Dominic is often remembered as the founder of the Dominican Order, but if you had asked him to describe himself, he probably would have answered much more simply.
He was a preacher.
Born in 1170 in Caleruega, Spain, Dominic grew up in a deeply Catholic family. As a young man, he studied theology and became a canon of the cathedral at Osma. He loved learning, but he never viewed study as an end in itself. For Dominic, the purpose of knowing the truth was to share it with others.
One story from his youth says a great deal about the man he would become. During a severe famine, books were among his most valuable possessions. In the Middle Ages, a library represented years of work and enormous expense. Yet Dominic sold his books to feed the hungry, reportedly saying, “I could not bear to prize dead skins while living souls were starving.”
That balance never left him.
He loved books.
He loved study.
But he loved people even more.
Everything changed during a journey through southern France. There, Dominic encountered the Albigensian heresy, which had drawn many people away from the Catholic faith. He noticed something important. Many Catholic preachers traveled with large entourages and impressive displays of wealth, while the heretical teachers lived simply among the people.
Dominic realized that if the Church hoped to win hearts, it needed preachers whose lives matched their message.
So he began walking from town to town on foot.
He preached in marketplaces, in homes, and wherever people would listen. He debated patiently, answered questions, and spent long hours speaking with those who had left the Church. His goal was never to win an argument. It was to win a soul.
Out of that mission grew the Order of Preachers, known today as the Dominicans. Dominic wanted his friars to be men of prayer, study, and preaching, believing that good preaching begins on one’s knees and is strengthened in the library before it is proclaimed from the pulpit.
One of the oldest traditions connected with Saint Dominic is his deep love for the Rosary. Although historians continue to discuss exactly how the devotion developed, for centuries Catholics have associated Dominic with spreading the Rosary as a powerful way of meditating on the life of Christ through the eyes of His Blessed Mother. Whether preaching in a village square or praying quietly in a chapel, Dominic understood that truth and prayer always belonged together.
Today, pilgrims can visit the Basilica of Saint Dominic, where his tomb has drawn visitors for more than eight hundred years. Many of the Church’s greatest theologians, including Saint Thomas Aquinas, walked in Dominic’s footsteps, carrying forward the mission he began.
Saint Dominic reminds us that the truth is never something to keep to ourselves. It is a gift meant to be shared with charity, humility, and joy.
